Why develop the KOTLL service? (continued)

In all of the currently available systems players use for their online RPG sessions, none has facilitated the ability to play with miniatures or maps as you can in tabletop play. Many players long for the ability to move game pieces on a map. The interaction between NPC’s, monsters, and players becomes very clear when using miniatures and tabletop maps. This factor has kept many players from taking all of their gaming sessions to computer-based RPG gaming.

KOTLL understands players’ and DMs’ desires to play in a visually stimulating environment. This is why the KOTLL interface is designed with an integrated mapping component. The DM creates the map for the game as he or she would in a tabletop game, but in this instance it is ported to the web. Players can move miniature icons that represent their character anywhere on the map just as they would in a tabletop game. Similarly, the DM can move NPC’s, monsters, or even player icons. All this is done in a simulated real-time type environment. What this means is that when an icon is moved, all the other game participants see where it was moved. Amazingly, all of this game play takes place on the same screen where the chat and dice rolling takes place. The integration of each component is designed so that users don’t have to screen hop or jump from program to program in order to play.
